A Progressive Community Church for All Seekers

About The Current

The Current is a loving, accepting progressive community church of people learning from one another as the world journeys toward awakened Universal Consciousness. The Current exists because so many of us sense the energy of the Conscious Universe flowing through all things yet can’t find a place to talk about our ideas. We are spiritually religious, students of quantum physics and the ancient mystics like Jesus, Lao Tzu, Buddha, Mohammed. Krishna and others who teach transformation through the discovery of God’s loving kindness within us all.

We understand that a journey toward wholeness with God and each other requires constant self-reflection and study from a wide variety of disciplines, both religious and secular.  Science, especially astrophysics and quantum physics, are important disciplines at The Current and temper our study of the Bible, the Dhammapada, the Qur’an and other religious texts.

While we honor our Christian heritage, The Current has a distinctly 21st Century personality. Our style’s a bit more fluid. An eclectic mix of music encourages us to think about the secular in sacred ways. We cherish moments of silence, leaving space for God’s loving whispers. We encourage questions about God, the Bible, Jesus, and spirituality in general.

We find answers at the intersection of faith and science by keeping open hearts and open minds.

The Current is a member church of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a progressive, social-justice oriented Protestant denomination.

Mission

The Current is an online progressive gathering space for spiritual seekers of all types, especially people who identify as spiritual but not religious and Christians growing out of the dogma and creed of orthodox Christianity. If you feel the tug of the Conscious Universe but are turned off by the language and ideology of orthodox religion you’ll find a welcoming, supportive environment at The Current, where we think changing your mind is the first step toward changing the world.

Vision

The Current is an online spiritual community of creative thinkers searching for more contemporary and effective ways to talk about God. We are students of The Way of Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, and others who taught unconditional love and the necessity of community. We largely reject the dogmas and creeds that have formed into institutionalized religion.

If you have been hurt or rejected by a church; if you have outgrown the idea that humans are worthless sinners (we most certainly are not); if you sense in quantum physics a deeper sense of the interconnectedness of all things, then The Current is the safe space you’ve been looking for.

Rev. Michael Junkroski

Pastor Michael Junkroski

Rev. Michael Junkroski was born in Baltimore, but raised on the Southside of Chicago, then Dekalb, Illinois; Dallas and Austin, Texas; Lake Charles, Moss Bluff, and New Orleans, Louisiana; and Salt Lake City and St. George, Utah. As a professional musician, Michael traveled the world. In addition to his Jewish/Roman Catholic heritage, travel provided Michael with a universal appreciation for the great diversity of people and their cultures worldwide.

For much of his adolescence, Christians of various denominations told Michael that if he didn’t “believe” in Jesus, he would go to Hell. This caused an outright rejection of Christianity for decades, even while Michael developed a relationship with Jesus the Jewish Wisdom teacher, mystic, and Ascended Master. It wasn’t until later in life that Michael realized his “unorthodox” ideas about Christianity and Jesus were, in fact, older than the orthodoxy.

Years of musical performances and spiritual questioning converged one Sunday when Michael was asked to play piano at a small Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation in Naples, Florida. After the service that day, Michael struck up a conversation with the Pastor, who was modern, well-versed in the historical context of the Bible, a fan of science, and a universalist (everyone is okay with God, no matter what they call themselves or are called by others). Michael continued to attend church. Eventually, he played in the band, then became music director, then attended seminary, and eventually was called as the Sr. Pastor of a church that now calls itself The Current, in honor of the powerful flow of loving, Universal Consciousness—a term we are using as a more contemporary and accurate way to describe God.

Pastor Michael is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a mainline, progressive Christian denomination. He holds degrees in Telecommunications from the University of Utah with a music minor, and a Master’s in Divinity from Lexington Theological Seminary, one of the nation’s oldest accredited theological institutions. Before becoming a minister he was a professional musician and co-owner of a successful technology consulting service.

Michael remains an active musician, with his wife Trudy, composing, arranging, and recording new music.

As a postmodern, progressive Christian minister, Pastor Michael teaches Jesus as both the historical, counter-cultural revolutionary he was, and the idealization of human/divine oneness Jesus teaches us all to strive to be—and assures us we are capable of becoming.

When Was The Current Established ?

Pastor Michael hosting online God Connect services.First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was founded in Naples, Florida in 1954. After decades of iterations and the inevitable attendance loss experienced by all religions the past few decades, FCC sold its physical building in 2011. While FCC still exists, we have been The Current for more than a decade now.

We exist at the intersection of science and faith. We’re more progressive than a traditional Christian church. We openly encourage questions about God, the Bible, Jesus, and spirituality. Such questions won’t even be entertained at standard churches. It’s our goal to seek the truth in any way we can while striving to be the best people we can possibly be. Since we’re an interactive online church, anyone is free to join us. It doesn’t matter where you live or what you believe in. As long as you have a reliable internet connection, we welcome you with open arms.
